Discord setup

A quick guide to setting up a Discord server for your community or FiveM server.

Creating Your Server

  1. Open Discord and click the + icon in the left sidebar

  2. Choose Create My Own

  3. Select For a club or community or For me and my friends

  4. Give your server a name and icon

  5. Click Create

Setting Up Roles

Good role structure keeps your server organised and secure.

Role
Purpose

Owner

Assign to bots so you can manage their permissions easily

How to Create a Role

  1. Go to Server Settings β†’ Roles

  2. Click Create Role

  3. Set the name, colour, and permissions

  4. Click Save Changes

Setting Up Permissions

  1. Go to Server Settings β†’ Roles

  2. Click a role and go to the Permissions tab

  3. Enable or disable permissions for that role

πŸ’‘ Tip: Use channel-level permission overrides rather than giving roles sweeping permissions. It's safer and more flexible.

Finding Your Server ID (Guild ID)

You'll need this when configuring bots and tools.

  1. Go to User Settings β†’ Advanced

  2. Enable Developer Mode

  3. Right-click your server name in the sidebar

  4. Click Copy Server ID

Finding a Channel or User ID

With Developer Mode enabled:

  • Right-click any channel β†’ Copy Channel ID

  • Right-click any user β†’ Copy User ID

Useful Server Settings

Go to Server Settings and review:

Set to Only @mentions so members aren't spammed

Enable for moderation actions β€” protects against compromised staff accounts

System Messages

Disable join/leave messages or route them to a private channel

Inviting a Bot

  1. Get the bot's invite link (from its documentation or dashboard)

  2. Open the link in your browser

  3. Select your server from the dropdown

  4. Review and approve the requested permissions

  5. Click Authorise
